Prayer Before Studying Scripture

Here are some brief prayers to pray before reading the Bible:

Speak Lord, your servant is listening. (See 1 Samuel 3:10.)

Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your Word. (See Psalm 119:18.)

Lord, make my heart burn within me as you speak to me through your Word. (See Luke 24:32.)

Lord, open my mind to understand your Scriptures. (See Luke 24:46.)

We start our Thursday mornings together with the following prayer:

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.
And You shall renew the face of the earth.

O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit,
did instruct the hearts of the faithful,
grant that by the same Holy Spirit
we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations.
Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

We close with the following prayers:

Prayer to St. Michael
St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness

and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God, cast into hell
Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl throughout the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

The Angelus

V: The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R: And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

     Hail Mary...

V: Behold the Handmaid of the Lord.

R: Be it done to me according to thy word.

     Hail Mary...

V: And the Word was made flesh.

R: And dwelt among us.

     Hail Mary...

V: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God

R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray:  Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy Grace into our hearts that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

and during the Easter season, we pray:

Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven)
Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia. / For he whom you did merit to bear, alleluia.
Has risen, as he said, alleluia. / Pray for us to God, alleluia.
Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. / For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.

Let us pray. O God, who gave joy to the world through the Resurrection of thy Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, grant we beseech thee, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
